Four squared is 16. 4/16 is Foursquare Day!

Foursquare Day is something I look forward to every year for one unique reason.

Sure, there are AMAZING deals to be had on Foursquare Day. It’s almost like a geek’s Black Friday Sale. This year there will be scoops of ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s, a “Foursquare Trail” at Portland State University and FREE pizza at Pizza Schmizza! And yes, there are extra badges to be unlocked in the app. Bonus points to be awarded. Foursquare cupcakes! Even a giant pinata shaped like a Whiffies pie at the Swarm Party! The list of cool things rolls on.

But the reason I like Foursquare Day the most is all about the new people I meet each year. Since 2010 my circle of friends and acquaintances has changed drastically. I won’t go as far to say that it’s all thanks to Foursquare, but it sure played a large role. When I moved the Portland area for work in September 2006 I knew a small handful of friends from back home in Centralia. Those people still mean the world to me. But thanks to meetups like the Foursquare Day Swarm Party that happens at Whiffies each year I’ve expanded my horizons and met some of the neatest people in Portland! You know who you are.

So as the Swarm Party at Whiffies nears once again, I’m excited to meet new faces and make new friends all over again.

WE’RE HAVIN’ A BABY!

So last night Bria comes into our room and says, “Did you get the note I left for you?”

“Huh? What note?” I replied.

She dismissed it as nothing, but I insisted on knowing what note she spoke of.  I got up and looked around the bedroom and made my way into the bathroom. There I noticed the thermometer-looking thing that had been on the counter since Tuesday. It had “#3″ written on it in Sharpie. I’d seen it there all week, but completely dismissed it and shoved it around the counter every time it got in my way.

But last night was different. Yesterday morning she’d left a note alongside the mysterious device. Now it was all clear. I’m going to be a daddy again!

Both of our children were conceived by what popular opinion would deem “the wrong time.” Funds are low, debt is high and life changing decisions are being made. Then all of the sudden, despite every precaution, God says, “I’ve got something for ya!”

Every time we’ve felt a little fear with a lot of excitement!

I can’t wait to meet #3.

Decisions Set a Course

In recent months I’ve come to understand that three daily decisions control my destiny. These decisions are…

1) What I focus on.

What do I spend the most time thinking about?

2) What things mean to me.

What means the most to me? Does this match-up with what I focus on?

3) What to do.

Does what I do on an hourly basis match up with what means the most to me? Is it a direct reflection of what I focus on? Where am I spinning my wheels?

In order to create the results that I desire in life, I have to learn to get out of my own way. I’ve learned that I DECIDE what I focus on. I DECIDE what something means to me. And I DECIDE what to do with each moment of my day. These decisions create results – either good or bad.

Find a way.

Make a way.

Or get out of the way.

I hope these thoughts bring an inward focus for some to consider what direction each decision takes us.

Twitterdipity: What Is It?

This Thursday I have the unique opportunity to present at a social media communications conference called 140 Conference NW (#140confNW) as a part of a panel on the topic “Twitterdipity.”

The new sublime, mighty community with only 140 letters!

I wanted to share some of my thoughts ahead of time on the idea behind Twitterdipity and have the chance to share a little more at length than I’ll be able to do at the conference. [The format of the conference is 10-minute presentations and 20-minute panels.]

Twitterdipity is an idea articulated by my fellow panelist Michelle Rae Anderson on Read Write Web. To summarize, it’s the culmination of online relationships resulting in an opportunity presenting itself at just the right moment. As Anderson put it:

Twitterdipity is the experience of wading in Twitter’s shallow, fast-moving data stream and suddenly – and surprisingly – mining treasure from a tweet. It’s casually catching the eye of good fortune in a speed-of-light culture. It’s when you score a free ticket to an exclusive event or click a game-changing link at just the right time.

For my part of the panel, I’ll be focusing on what those gold nuggets of Twitterdipity are when it comes to personal relationships.  I believe there are 3 things to watch for on Twitter to be in the right place at the right time to have your life changed by making a new friendship.

1) Go To Tweet ups.

These mostly spontaneous meet-ups provide the opportunity to leave your mother’s basement and join the real world. In Portland, OR a particular food cart has become the staple spot for tweet-ups. I’ve journeyed 20 minutes from my home at the drop of a dime to enjoy Whiffies Fried Pies with people I’ve communicated with on Twitter.

The first time I stepped out of the box to do such a thing was at Dale Chumbley’s beckoning when he sent out his self-named hashtag, the Pie Signal. The #mmmmpie hashtag acted like a Bat Signal summoning folks on Twitter to come meet for some pie and conversation. I showed up and my life changed.

Not only was the pie great (and I’ll show up at Whiffies with or without a tweet up any day), but I made friends that have inspired me, taught me and enhanced my life in many ways. Some of these include (but are not limited to) my other fellow panelist Mary Rarick, Beaverton real estate dude and 3-point shooting arsonist, Mike Rohrig, good friend and practicing home loan ninja, Jason Hillard, Portland Happy Hour Guidebook author, Cindy Anderson and even Lynsey Smith’s mother’s dog.

2) Follow Users with Common Interests.

Depending on when/where you met me you may know that I’m a pretty huge Portland Trail Blazers fan. In fact, since October of 2008 I’ve attended Blazers home games as DarthBlazer, the Dark Lord of the Swish – a Halloween gimmick gone horribly right for me.

BlazerFett (Mike Schilpp) is one of the hardcore Blazermaniacs!

Just after that first game vs. the Spurs on Halloween night of ’08 I launched a MySpace page for Darth. It gained instant popularity with people asking me to attend games with them (I assumed so they could get on the jumbotron with the freak in the Vader helmet).

What I found out is that over time (and as MySpace devolved and Darth moved to FB and Twitter) is that these people just wanted to connect with someone as hardcore a Blazers fan as themselves. While most never had the courage to paint their faces or wear a mask (some did), they knew they were going to meet a person with a common interest.

3) Be Genuine.

I wrote about this once before, but it was mostly as it pertained to brands and businesses. As an individual it is imperative that you understand that social media is about connecting with people. Think of Twitter or Facebook as the backyard BBQ you’ve attended in the past. Do you really want to be the “I’m selling ____. Here’s my card” guy? Or how about the “I just read this great article in [insert publication here]. I’m so smart!” gal?

For some reason, Twitter has appeared as a platform for some to drip market, auto-tweet and RT social media articles that engage little-to-none of their followers. Please don’t do this. If you found this blog post on Twitter, I sincerely hope it was because we’ve chatted there or met in real life at some point. If it was a RT, I want to know that it was from a friend who knows me and was inspired by this. If it was a marketer RTing another article in their long list of spammy tweets – I hope they take the time to read this and change their ways.

Build relationships!

Be a human. Don’t approach social media looking for tactics and strategies. Like it or not, you’ll find that more people care about who you are than what you know or what you do for a living. Don’t worry, they’ll learn what you do over time. And when they need your product or service, you’ll be at the top of their list – that is, if you’ve made a friend.

Low hanging fruit: When friends were a dime per dozen.

Remember school? In our early years we are given two very important gifts: time & relationships. So much of both that we wasted a lot of time and quickly enjoyed and disposed of friendships like we devoured tater tots at lunch.

That’s because friendships were low hanging fruit. If we grabbed one down and took a bite and didn’t enjoy it, we’d toss it away and quickly grab another. The problem with that is that as time and relationships became more difficult to come by, we realized that a few good friends is very important.

If you take one thing away from this, let it be this…

Social media has given you a second chance. The social graph of high school and college exists on Facebook and Twitter where you can stay connected with acquaintances and build new relationships. Lasting relationships. It will still take time (perhaps not as much with mobile devices, et. al), but you once again have the opportunity to make new friends and experience the connectivity phenomenon known as Twitterdipity.

A Whole New World

2011 came speeding into my life like a runaway freight train. I’m not sure that I’ve experienced more change, more growth and more fun at any other time in my life.

It’s been so busy, you’ll notice my last blog entry was in December.

What’s kept me so busy?

First of all, ZZoom Media, the company I started almost one year ago, has really picked up speed. So much so that I no longer have a day-job and it is no longer a supplemental income. It’s my job. I’m self-employed and responsible for 5 other individuals as I build this company.

I’m loving every minute of it!

Of course, I get to go to work to build projects and campaigns such as this one – Spiff The Biff!

Spiff The Biff is a project ZZoom Media was asked to do for First Aid Only. They’re a forward-thinking corporation with their eyes on doing business differently in this “Thank You Economy.” After struggling to exist in a retail environment where first aid kits are not necessarily a top-of-mind purchase (everyone knows they need a kit, but no one puts it on their shopping list), they reinvented themselves as a fundraiser company called RightResponse offering groups a 50% profit margin on first aid kit fundraising.

We’ve branded RightResponse with 5 themed fundraisers to choose from!

First, there is the classic approach. Clean design and simple sales. It’s first aid made easy.

Second, there’s Spiff The Biff. It’s a little edgy and lots of fun. Great for folks who love the new social web! It includes a full-fledged YouTube video series that runs every week hosted by Dr. Biff and his assistant, Spiff. They’re hilarious! Of course, they’re on Facebook and Twitter, too.

Thirdly, the Red Cross has gotten involved offering another option branded by the worldwide humanitarian organization where 10% of every sale makes its way back to the Red Cross.

The fourth option is Operation Give-a-Kit. This is for groups who don’t want to deal with delivering the product, but want to support a great cause. They can choose a group like Direct Relief International, Medical Teams International or WorldVision to sell kits on behalf of. Every kit goes straight to the organization for use aboard in disasters like what we’ve recently witnessed in Japan.

The fifth and final option is ready for launch in Summer 2011. It’s the Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser. A portion goes to support Breast Cancer research and every kit is pink-themed to bring further awareness to the need to fight this devastating illness.

So… yeah. That’s what I’ve been up. I hope this blog finds you well. Please check out the project and certainly consider RightResponse for your church, school or youth group’s next fundraiser!

God bless.

The Top 10 of 2010

2010 had a lot of highlights for me and my family. This is a short list of a few of my favorite moments or findings of 2010. It’s not a countdown or a ranking, just the first 10 things I think of when I think about twenty-ten. Enjoy!

Family Summer Vacation at Disneyland

A happy year’s highlights start with the Happiest Place On Earth. In July we made the drive to LA for three days of thrills! The drive was long with a nearly-one-year-old Luke in the back seat and 6-year-old Keziah being as patient as she could be. We left late afternoon in hopes that the kids would sleep most of the way and it worked for the most part. Daddy didn’t get any sleep. We arrived in Anaheim, California at about 6am and I was beat. A quick refuel at Denny’s and once we walked through those gates I was a re-energized man.

On our first day we celebrated Luke’s first birthday. His favorite rides were It’s A Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dumbo and the Storybookland boats.

Keziah’s favorites were Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Grizzly River Run and Pirates.

What we didn’t expect was the crowds and excitement that comes along with the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. I grew up as an avid MLB fan, but haven’t followed the sport closely in many years. I did think it was neat to see the All-Star Parade as I stood just feet away from a few childhood favorites as they passed by. Notables included: Ichiro, Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson, David “Big Papi” Ortiz, Joe Mauer, Alex Rodriguez, Rod Carew, Derek Jeter & Albert Pujols.

My favorite ride? Star Tours. And I rode it for the last time on this trip as it is now closed for a complete overhaul. Star Tours II will be based on the newer movies and debut in May, 2011.

Check out dozens of photos of our fun at Disneyland on Facebook.

San Francisco Getaway

Good times in "The City By The Bay!"

In mid-November Bria and I were able to get away from it all together… ALONE! It was marvelous spending three days with the love of my life in The City by the Bay. We hadn’t gotten away (just the two of us) since our anniversary in August of ’06. If you know my fear of flight, you already know we drove this one, too.

My lead foot got us there in just under 9 hours. The drive didn’t seem like much as we were able to talk more than we have in years without interruption. We arrived in San Francisco just after 3am.

After a short nap we spent our first day at Candlestick Park to see the 49ers take on the St. Louis Rams. Our seats were just 3 rows up on the corner of the end zone where the Rams enter the field. I got a Michael Crabtree jersey and Bria got a Patrick Willis jersey just for the occasion. The Niners won on a field goal in overtime, 23-20.

That evening we went to Fior d’Italia - America’s oldest Italian establishment. The food was amazing!

We went from there across town to the Marriott Marquis to see about the “Death Star Bar” I’d heard so much about. The view from there was like nothing I’d ever experienced. The View Lounge is located on the 39th floor and features a window overlooking The City that bears an uncanny resemblance to the window that The Emperor, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader watch the Battle of Endor from in Return of the Jedi.

The following day and a half we explored every part of the city we could. We rode the trolley, climbed Coit Tower, ate at Ghirardelli Square, explored Little Italy and toured Alcatraz. I would HIGHLY suggest the tour of Alcatraz for the rich history and unique experience it provides. From the views of the bay to the stories of escape attempts… It’s amazing!

Of course, we took a ton of photos!

The Great Escape!

Speaking of escaping from a federal prison, in July of this year I was FREED FROM THE CAR BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never intended to sell cars in this lifetime (I figured that was part of the Hell I read about in the Bible and prayed never to experience). But after starting at the Internet Marketing Dept. for the Dick Hannah Honda store in 2006, I found myself standing outside 3 years later chasing cars like a dog on a leash. Despite winning multiple awards of the highest honor for a car guy, it’s the most demeaning job on earth and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I performed more rewarding tasks at Taco Bell and oftentimes took home larger paychecks for crafting 79-cent burritos in 1998 than I did selling cars for 10′s of 1000′s of dollars from 2006 to 2010.

Dad’s Halfway Party

He’s halfway there!

My dad told me when I was very young that his #1 goal in life is to be at my 80th birthday party. That would make him 103 at that time. I’ve always felt the pressure is heavier on me to make it to 80 as I have not run a marathon, climbed Mt. Rainier or ridden a bike from Seattle to Portland in less than a day. He has.

July 12th, 2010 marked my dad’s 51st & 1/2 half-birthday. At his direction, we never celebrated his 50th birthday with the typical black-themed “over-the-hill” party. Instead, there was this day. Friends from far and wide joined dad at his beach home in Ocean Shores to celebrate his half-way point!  It was a fun day full of amazing cakes, walks on the beach and pizza.

iPhone

This one wasn’t originally on the list. I didn’t realize it’s only been one year since I put this life-changing device in my life. Quite frankly, I don’t know what life was without it. It now records video and takes photo of my kids, maintains my fantasy football and basketball leagues, entertains me, plays movies, gives me the weather and puts me within arms reach of everyone I care about with features like email, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare and more. Un. Be. Leave. Able.

ZZoom Media

This April while suffering through my job on the car lot, a convergence took place. The ideas I’ve had for years coupled with my training in marketing, retail and promotions met Joel Gibby’s amazing tech expertise and Scotty Hiltz’s amazing sales ability. After a few weeks of chatting about it as a distant idea – ZZoom Media was formed almost instantly around a day called “Foursquare Day.”

Since then we’ve sprinkled in just a dash of genius with Justen Martian (web developer extraordinaire) and a helping of awesomesauce in Derek W. Wyatt (magnificent marketing mind).

We’re growing fast and it’s exciting! Of course, I should shamelessly plug this: if you or a business owner/independent professional you know is in need of a better Internet presence or is just overwhelmed by all this “Social Media” stuff they keep hearing about, please put them in touch with me.

Twitter People

It sounds silly to some, but I’ve made some amazing friends on a social media platform called “Twitter.” Like-minded folks that share common goals and interests interact with me there and I’ve had the opportunity to meet no less than 40 of these “Tweeps” in real life. A few of us even became instrumental in starting a monthly meet-up for Twitter users in Vancouver, WA now known as “‘Couve Cool Kids.”

These people aren’t the basement-living nerds that Weird Al sings about. They’re developers, real estate professionals, ninjas, business owners, home loan professionals, police officers, newscasters, writers and more. Yes, I said ninjas.

Kids

My kids are now at an awesome age where I enjoy (almost) every moment with them.

My Kids!

Keziah is 6 years old and has been invited to test out of the 1st Grade. She’s a genius, she’s beautiful and has a witty personality that is scary at times. She maintains a diary on her own and likes to write notes for mom and dad that tell us how much she loves us.  She played baseball this year and did very well (in fact, she put the bat on the ball for a single in her first ever at-bat)! She’s also very patient as she is often the oldest of up to 8 kids Bria has at our home babysitting. She shares, teaches and plays with children of all ages and is a great helper.

Luke is coming up on a year-and-a-half and is walking, dancing, talking and playing with toys. He’s very organizational and likes things put in their place. For instance, if I take my shoes off in the wrong room, he will relocate them for me. He’s got the cutest and the most awesome head of curly hair on earth. He sometimes gets called “her” or “she” by strangers. I recall dealing with that until I was 6 or 7 years old with similar curly locks. That just lets me know that he’s going to grow to be a super-stud like his father.

Steak Bites

Life changing. I’ve told you all about Krispy Kreme. I’ve sung the praises of Buffalo Wild Wings from the rooftops. I’ve stood in line at Voodoo Doughnut for over an hour to have my 3rd helping of the week. But this, I tell you, trumps the rest!

Steak Bites!

Ringside Steakhouse has long been known as Portland’s finest steakhouse. You’ll find signed menus adorning the walls from the most famous people on earth in the last 50 years. Presidents, athletes, musicians, entertainers, actors… they’ve all dined at Ringside.

But, the gem I found exists from 3pm-6pm and 9:30pm-Midnight. It’s their happy hour item “Steak Bites”. 6-8 oz. of USDA Prime beef served for $2.25. I typically sit down and say, “May I please have a quadrouple order of the Steak Bites, please?”

$9 for 24-32 oz. of award-winning steak sliced up perfectly with a little horseradish sauce for dipping.

‘Nuff said.

Thanks 2010 and thanks to all the amazing people added to my growing list of friends this year!

Now, let’s blow the roof off of 2011!

Why Blog?

The reality is that I’ve been blogging for a while. I’ve blogged about basketball, social media, marketing, music and more.

The real question is, “Why do I need my own blog?”

Well, I really don’t need a blog. What I need is water, food, clothing, shelter and love & belonging. Beyond that, I don’t need anything.

So, the real question is, “Why do I want to blog?”

Hmm… I don’t really want to. There’s a lot of other more productive things I could do with my time. I mean, I didn’t write term papers for fun in High School. I sure as heck ain’t gonna start.

So, then the really real question is, “Why am I blogging?”

Must be because someone told me I should, right? Nope. This was my idea.

So, then the realest of really real questions is, “Why?!”

Well, let me tell you.

Reason #1: Journaling. I like to record my thoughts on life as it happens. A record of who I am, who I was and what I did.

Reason #2: Relaxation. Putting the thoughts in my head on paper or in writing is cathartic and mood-changing.

Reason #3: Feedback. Here’s hoping comments provide a conversation that entertains, informs and helps me grow.

Reason #4: Education. Who knows? Maybe the hairy guy with the Italian last name knows something you don’t already know. Then again, maybe not.

So here it goes. You might as well “Subscribe” or “Opt-in” or “Digg” or “Follow” or “Favorite” or “Bookmark” or whatever the latest way to pretend you’re actually reading this stuff is. It’ll be a nice ride.
